Preserving History with Purpose
Your congregation’s history is more than a list of names and dates—it’s part of the ongoing story of Christ’s work through his church. But too often, church history is forgotten, misunderstood, or celebrated without meaning. This session helps congregations see their history as a testimony to God’s faithfulness and a call to faithfulness today.
Participants will learn how to collect and preserve their church’s history—from photos and records to personal stories—while focusing on the spiritual lessons these stories reveal. We’ll explore how to use your history as a tool for discipleship, teaching new members that they are part of something bigger than themselves. This session also offers practical guidance for preserving important church records, planning anniversary events, teaching local church history, and helping members see their congregation’s heritage as part of the great story of Christ’s church across centuries.
Susan Willems has served as the archivist for WELS since 2016, preserving and promoting the synod’s rich historical legacy. A proud alumna of Wisconsin Lutheran College, Susan holds a master’s degree in American history from Marquette University and a master of library and information science (MLIS) from the University of Denver. From 2010 to 2016, she worked in the archives at the University of Denver, developing expertise in archival management and historical research. Susan is a dedicated member of Christ the Lord in Brookfield, Wis., where she actively participates in congregational life. Outside of her professional and church commitments, she is a devoted wife and mother of two daughters and has a strong personal interest in World War II history and travel. Susan’s passion for faith, history, and discovery continues to shape her work in preserving the stories that define WELS.
