Many WELS congregations describe their Lutheran elementary school or early childhood ministry as an “outreach ministry.” And while schools provide daily opportunities to share Christ with children, most congregations gain few—if any—new members through school-based ministry. But some do. This session examines the difference. What sets apart those churches where the school truly functions as a bridge to congregational membership? What intentional practices have helped connect unchurched families not just to Christian education—but to Christ and his Church?

Participants will explore essential strategies for making school ministry a meaningful outreach effort: spiritual engagement with parents; consistent invitations to worship and Bible study; clarity about Lutheran beliefs; and a culture where families feel known, loved, and challenged. But this session is also about discernment. While every school can serve the purpose of youth discipleship, not every school is positioned to be an effective outreach arm. Leaders will be encouraged to evaluate whether their current model truly serves evangelism or whether a different evangelism approach might bear more fruit. Come ready to think critically, act intentionally, and pursue Christ’s mission with zeal.
