How Pornography Is Quietly Discipling Our Members and What to Do About It

Pornography is not just a cultural problem—it’s a church problem. The statistics are staggering, and the spiritual fallout is real. Boys and girls, men and women, lay members and church leaders—so many are quietly enslaved by porn. Yet in most congregations and schools, the topic remains taboo. It’s rarely addressed. And few churches provide any pathway for help or healing.

This breakout confronts the uncomfortable truth: pornography is actively discipling our members—shaping their view of relationships, sexuality, repentance, and God himself. If the church remains silent, shame and secrecy will continue to thrive. This session offers honest, gospel-centered guidance for pastors, teachers, and lay leaders who want to do something about it. You’ll leave with practical strategies and tools: how to speak about porn in preaching and teaching; how to create spaces for confession and accountability; how to recommend resources that actually help; and how to build a congregational culture of grace, not shame. It’s time to name the struggle—and bring the light of Christ where it’s most needed.

Rev. Brad Snyder is campus pastor at St. Croix Lutheran Academy and has served congregations in Green Bay, Wis., and Boise, Idaho. He is also the chairman of a WELS ministry called Conquerors through Christ, which produces resources for those affected by the wreckage of pornography as well as helpful resources for parents and church leaders to help guide others toward good things God gives and away from the lies pornography tells. Conquerors through Christ is part of the WELS Special Ministries Committee on Mental Health Needs.
