Breaking the Volunteer Bottleneck
Have you heard of the 20/80 rule? It states that 20 percent of the people often do 80 percent of the serving, while the majority remain on the sidelines. The result? Burned-out volunteers, stalled ministries, and untapped potential within the body of Christ. But what if that dynamic could be broken? What if closer to 100 percent of your members were joyfully using their God-given gifts to serve him? This session explores how congregations can overcome the 20/80 bottleneck and foster a culture in which all members see themselves as a vital part of the mission.
Drawing on experiences at Trinity, Crete, Ill., where they had 100 percent of worshipers actively involved in ministry, you’ll learn how to identify barriers that keep members from serving and take concrete steps toward lasting culture change. This breakout will inspire you to move beyond volunteer scarcity and toward gospel-motivated abundance in your congregation’s life and ministry.
Rev. Frank Italiano serves as the lead pastoral consultant for Faith Unleashed Consulting. In that role, he shares his insights and experience with other pastors and congregations that are considering beginning a member ministry program in their congregation. For 26 years, Frank served at Trinity, Crete, Ill., where the congregation started “personal member ministry,” which systematically encourages members to use their God-given gifts to serve others. Faith Unleashed Consulting was started to help other churches do the same. He recently accepted a call to St. Paul’s, Muskego, Wis.
Frank is also passionate about using music to proclaim God’s Word, which means he is passionate about motivating and equipping members of his church to use their musical gifts and abilities. Frank recognizes the blessings of getting the right person in the right place in all areas of ministry. Besides empowering others to use their gifts, he enjoys using his gifts to play violin, bass guitar, and tuba whenever he can.
