Why Yesterday’s Methods Miss Today’s Hearts
There was a time when evangelism could assume that many in our communities were “church shopping.” The task was to help them find a church home. That world is largely gone. Most of our neighbors are not comparing congregations; they are living without any church at all. For many, the only time they set foot in a sanctuary is for a wedding or a funeral. Yet despite this cultural shift, congregations often cling to older outreach tools—mailings, marketing, congregational programs—because they feel safe. Those methods ask little of us personally, and they let us believe we’ve “done outreach” without ever engaging a neighbor face-to-face. But in today’s post-Christian context, the approaches that feel comfortable are rarely the ones that connect.
This breakout will be unapologetically practical. Participants will explore strategies and tactics that any congregation can adopt, regardless of size or setting. You will learn how to shift from “hoping people visit” to building bridges where people actually live. Leaders will be pressed to ask and honestly answer this hard question: Are our evangelism strategies actually working? The goal: evangelism that provides the best opportunity for touching souls, because it meets people where they are.
Rev. Joseph Lindloff and his wife, Julie, served for seven years at Hope, Irmo, S.C. In 2023 Joe accepted a call from the Northern Wisconsin District Mission Board to move to Marquette, Mich., and start a brand-new mission church.
Joe, Julie, and their four kids love many things about Marquette—the outdoors, the people, the culture—but most of all they love the opportunity to reach out to a ripe mission field with the good news about Jesus. They are so thankful to be a part of this year’s leadership conference!
